Remove the trigger guard, drift out the trigger pivot pin and remove the trigger (makes it easier to install the new spring). Remove the barrel, remove the stock, cock the hammer back and grab the hammer spring strut right behind the plate with a pair of needle nose pliers (locking ones are best as you won't have to fight with the spring later), uncock the hammer to relieve spring tension and remove the mainspring assembly keeping track of which direction the 1/2 round shoe on the hammer end of the strut faces.
